May 2010

End of April 2010. I and Alla G. are exploring the wonderful world of Moscow roofs. The adventure was powered by a few sips of grape vodka. The significance of Alla for you: cheap room for rent (see www.cheap-moscow.com/homestay.htm ), FREE GUIDE IN EXCHANGE FOR ENGLISH (she'll be formally introduced in the "Lean Russian with Uncle Pasha" page of my www.oldmanfriday.com project), and legal advice. SHE IS ALSO ON MY RUSSIAN WOMEN UP FOR GRABS PAGE.

The point of this dish is small gently fried onions. One of my favourite tricks is to fry them just enough to take the stink out while leaving crunchiness intact.

My vegetarian sentiments just couldn't resist large tiger shrimp at 300roubles ($10) per kilogram. By far the best place for seafood is the Vietnamese market on Semnadtsaty Projezd Mar'yinoy Roshi.

As the voice of opposition is being phased out of mass media the fashion of expressing political views on walls and fences is back. This one, found in Second Wind, one of my favourite low-life drinking establishments, says that Putin is not a nice person of limited intelligence while the Mayor of Moscow Luzhkov is just a thief.

This photo is to used in the invitation to the lowlife pub crawl.

For years I've been collecting images of Russian "PROHIBITED" signs. This is the second of "allowed" signs I've seen in this land of Nyet since 1993.  It says "Entry with animals PERMITTED".  This relief from ubiquitous "not allowed"  was located on the doors to the Time-Will-Not-Wait Business Center when we were taking a long walk though old Moscow in the Tvetnoy Boulevard area in an attempt to recover after the May 31 2010 demonstration in support of the right to free assembly.
